Love, Marriage, Divorce, Condi Rice and Wonder Woman

On today’s Satellite Sisters podcast, Lian Dolan, Julie Dolan and Liz Dolan discuss Condi Rice and Madam Secretary’s uncanny ability to predict the future, news on the future of love + marriage plus new brain science says that we are not meant to live in the now.  Plus travel news, fitness update and Robin Wright’s training regimen for Wonder Woman.

Conde Rice Democracy Madam Secretary

In Condi Rice’s new book Democracy, she writes about a crazy creepy crush that Khaddafi had on her. Hey, Madam Secretary watchers. Was this not a plot line earlier this season with a fictional strongman from the Philippines? Crazy coincidence or inside scoop? Well done, Barbara Hall and #MSec team.

First up, we salute the writers of Madam Secretary for anticipating the world’s focus on NATO’s Article 5. Two weeks ago, we had never heard of it.  Now, following the recent NATO meeting in Brussels, it’s on every front page around the world.  Plus, in Condoleezza Rice’s new book Democracy, she talks about General Muammar Khaddafi having a crazy crush on her.  Correct us if we are wrong, but didn’t Madam Secretary nail that plot line earlier in the season with a fictional leader of the Philippines? Crazy coincidence or inside scoop?

According to new scientific research, we’re not meant to live in the moment. Our most human trait is planning for the future. Worriers, Unite! This is good news for those of us who like to lie awake at night and imagine all the ways our future plans could go awry– or right. From the New York Times, We Aren’t Meant to Live in the Moment

Julie’s discussion about modern marriage is sparked by a release about a new book entitled “The New I Do: Reshaping Marriage for Skeptics, Realists and Rebels“. From there, we comment on this runners wedding announcement, this story about planning for divorce and this beautiful piece of Modern Love writing by solid gold Satellite Sister Delia Ephron. Plus First Ladies Desk: Renewing the mission to leave the ladies alone.

Robin Wright Wonder Woman

Robin Wright, Amazon General in the new Wonder Woman, told Stephen Colbert that in training it was very hard to eat 2000 – 3000 calories a day. Robin, call us. We got this.

Liz bumps into Wonder Woman Amazon General Robin Wright and wants to offer some training advice based on something she said on Colbert.  Liz is also not too sure that hanging all the furniture on hotel room walls Shaker-style is a great innovation but she’s happy to see the hotel minibars go.  Lian is excited about the announcement of Alanis Morrisette’s new musical.  You oughta go!

Memorial Day Special: Masters Swimming, Frozen Yogurt, Scooters

Satellite Sisters Vespa

Liz is thinking about trading in her car for a Vespa, but Sheila and Monica are skeptical about where she would put the earthquake supplies and piles of mail that currently clog up her trunk and back seat.

On today’s New To You Memorial Day Special from 2008, Liz Dolan, Sheila Dolan and Monica Dolan discuss Sheila’s Master’s swimming and whether Liz should buy a scooter. Where would she put her earthquake supplies if she did?

Plus the Lab Rats review frozen yogurt and we share two special letters from listeners serving in the military. Jeffrey is a Lt. Col.in the Medical Corps of the 101st Airborne in Iraq.  Erin’s husband is a Marine at the US Embassy in Beijing, China but was delivering earthquake relief supplies in Chengdu when we recorded this show.

The Lab Rats Sheila and Monica test frozen yogurt this week. It’s two paws up on the Pinkberry for Sheila, while Monica is concerned that the usual testing protocol has not been respected.

U2! Wonder Woman! Clam-Chowdah Soaked Toast!

Lian Dolan U2 Rose Bowl

Lian went to both U2 shows at the Rose Bowl this weekend, which makes us reflect both on the joyfulness of music and the horror of the attack in Manchester yesterday.

On today’s Satellite Sisters podcast, Lian Dolan, Julie Dolan and Liz Dolan are full of entertainment advice – still loving U2, why you need to support the new Wonder Woman movie, what’s in Deborah Tannen’s Very Satellite Sisters new book, wisdom from Tracee Ellis Ross on Blackish and alert for Conrad the Unicorn on America’s Got Talent.  Plus reflections on the Manchester bombing, enjoying some family graduations and toast.  Thank goodness for toast.

First up, Lian attended both U2 shows at the Rose Bowl this weekend.  It was not only a chance to enjoy her favorite band play music from her favorite album, but a time to experience the joyfulness of music.  This makes the awful bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester that much more horrifying. Our hearts go out.

On Tuesday shows, we go deep on shallow topics so this week we say “Thank you, Pippa!”.  With all the sad, bad news lately, we really needed the awesome photos of your million-dollar wedding to Whats-His-Name, as Julie calls him.  Well done, sister!

Liz attended the graduation of two of our nieces from NYU at Yankee Stadium last week.  A great event and special thanks to the vendors who opened up the merchandise booths to sell Yankee caps to all the guests sweltering in the 97 degree sun at 11 am.  Cash only?  No problem!

Julie has breaking toast news.  Check out this recipe: Chowder-Soaked Toast.  Chowdah + Toast. Say no more.

More entertainment recommendations from us this week:

recipes Satellite Sisters

Liz tells the tale of how Grilled Cheese with Maduros from Pilar in Brooklyn caused an Operation Sea Turtle setback, but Julie swears that nothing could be better than this Chowder-Soaked Toast recipe from the New York Times. .

Watch the new Love Actually sequel on Red Nose Day Thursday May 25 on NBC. It’s only 12 minutes. Phew.

Support female filmmakers by seeing Wonder Woman when it opens next weekend.  Lian interviewed  producer Deborah Snyder who reinforced how hard they worked to have women involved in every major part of the film, including director Patty Jenkins.

Also stay tuned for Megan Leavey starring Kate Mara.  The true story of a Marine MP trying to adopt her dog Rex. Just watched this trailer. Crying already.

Read this article by our cousin Hannah Kirshner about growing up in the same town where Twin Peaks is set.  We LOVE all of chef Hannah’s food recommendations.

And finally, Lian reports that her balloon artist friend’s audition on America’s Got Talent will air on the premiere next week.  You have to turn out to support Conrad The Unicorn!

A new study reports that female Supreme Court Justices are interrupted in court far more than their male counterparts.  Supreme Court Justices.  They are just like us!

Egg Hunt Ban, Beauty Bar Threat, Julie + her mother-in-law

We post this classic family Easter photo every year because it just makes us smile. It’s the Dolans and the Morningstars with our identical twin moms Edna and Eleanor and our grandfather William Klarman. Can you pick out the sisters? Who’s the rabbit? And what’s Julie’s problem? Photo taken on the front steps of our cousins’ house in Rye, NY.

On this New To You episode of Satellite Sisters from 2014, Julie wants to ban Easter egg hunts, Liz fears the looming threat of beauty bars in her neighborhood, Putin invades Ukraine and Julie mourns the loss of her mother-in-law, with whom she had a very difficult relationship.

Julie calls for the end of Easter egg hunts after witnessing her grandchildren get crushed in their own. Is the word “bloodbath” too strong?? Liz and Julie recall some of their own bruising Easter egg battles with their brothers and cousins as kids.

Julie also talks about her relationship with her mother-in-law, who passed away this weekend.  It was complicated. Her mother-in-law never liked her no matter how hard Julie tried. Now in death, there is grief, sadness and ambivalence.

Liz sees some dangerous trends developing in her neighborhood.  It’s gone beyond blow-dry bars and nail salons.  The latest scourge is the new lash lounge. Don’t people have better things to do with their time and money?

Liz is taking Lian and her sons to a table read for The Simpsons.  They are very excited and don’t care that Julie blames The Simpsons for the downfall of American culture. This new episode of The Simpsons was written by Judd Apatow when he was brand new in Hollywood looking for work.
