Mega Millions, Supreme Court News, Barcelona

Mega Millions

The Mega Millions jackpot this week inspired Lian’s latest lottery dreams. Don’t you love having those fantasies? We do.

This is a New To You show from April 1 2012. On today’s show, Lian, Sheila, Liz and Julie dream of Mega Millions, discuss Supreme Court news and Liz gets caught in some light rioting in Barcelona. Plus a Listener Mailbag with questions and observations pulled from our Satellite Sisters Facebook Group.

In the news, Lian loves a lottery!  So much bonding over the Mega Millions.  Julie finds the Supreme Court arguments about the health care law surprisingly lowbrow.  Broccoli? Cell Phones?  We thought this was about the law!  Plus she has a theory about how the decision will come out.  Sheila tells us a little more about her daily patterns around Pasadena.  There’s a new stop in addition to her usual Vons, BofA and Zushi Sushi. And Liz missed all the lottery and Supreme Court excitement this week, but did experience to total happening in Barcelona.  She’s not one to let a little light rioting spoil a good time.

Liz has bad news for Julie. Apparently, he’s not a terrible guy. Info about the author and book here. Then, the latest from Prince Harry about grief and recovery. The guy that invented the Internet died. And his name was Bob Taylor, the lab boss of the Xerox PARC lab. Here’s his obit. And here’s an appreciation by LAT writer Michael Hiltzek.

A new study reports that female Supreme Court Justices are interrupted in court far more than their male counterparts.  Supreme Court Justices.  They are just like us!

Egg Hunt Ban, Beauty Bar Threat, Julie + her mother-in-law

We post this classic family Easter photo every year because it just makes us smile. It’s the Dolans and the Morningstars with our identical twin moms Edna and Eleanor and our grandfather William Klarman. Can you pick out the sisters? Who’s the rabbit? And what’s Julie’s problem? Photo taken on the front steps of our cousins’ house in Rye, NY.

On this New To You episode of Satellite Sisters from 2014, Julie wants to ban Easter egg hunts, Liz fears the looming threat of beauty bars in her neighborhood, Putin invades Ukraine and Julie mourns the loss of her mother-in-law, with whom she had a very difficult relationship.

Julie calls for the end of Easter egg hunts after witnessing her grandchildren get crushed in their own. Is the word “bloodbath” too strong?? Liz and Julie recall some of their own bruising Easter egg battles with their brothers and cousins as kids.

Julie also talks about her relationship with her mother-in-law, who passed away this weekend.  It was complicated. Her mother-in-law never liked her no matter how hard Julie tried. Now in death, there is grief, sadness and ambivalence.

Liz sees some dangerous trends developing in her neighborhood.  It’s gone beyond blow-dry bars and nail salons.  The latest scourge is the new lash lounge. Don’t people have better things to do with their time and money?

Liz is taking Lian and her sons to a table read for The Simpsons.  They are very excited and don’t care that Julie blames The Simpsons for the downfall of American culture. This new episode of The Simpsons was written by Judd Apatow when he was brand new in Hollywood looking for work.

#EqualPayDay, Sheryl Sandberg, Mike Pence, Bill O’Reilly, Film and TV Reviews

Satellite Sisters recommend Big Little Lies on HBO. #EqualPayDay

The HBO series Big Little Lies has a great story, wonderful performances by fantastic women, skillful direction and awesome real estate. What more could you ask for, Satellite Sisters? Despite last week’s finale, it not too late to start now.

Happy #EqualPayDay. Today Lian Dolan, Liz Dolan and Julie Dolan take on Equal Pay Day and women in business, in general. Liz hosts a new podcast called I Hate My Boss, so we’re glad we have her on hand to take on Mike ‘I Don’t Eat Dinner With Women” Pence. And Sheryl Sandberg sobers us up about leaning in and getting 20% less pay. Finally, women in the workplace, beware of Bill O’Reilly. Not only will he sexually harass you, he’ll harass your handbag! Can’t a Satellite Sister get a break? Lian fills us in on her citizen diplomacy with International Women of Courage and the State Department.  Liz has good news and bad news about Operation Sea Turtle, her health and wellness program.  Julie has entertainment reviews from film and television.

We start the show with with Sheryl Sandberg’s observation on Equal Pay Day that even when women Lean In, they are not achieving equality with men.  Julie shares an editorial from the Wall Street Journal by Yale professor Asha Rangappa about whether Mike Pence’s policy of never dining alone with a woman even on professional business might have unintended positive consequences.  Liz and Lian don’t buy that for one single second.  If your boss or your colleague or your employee refuses to ever eat alone with you because of your gender, that’s just wrong.  Besides being just a throwback to an age we thankfully left behind where women were barely represented in the workplace.

Bill O'Reilly sexually harasses woman and insults her purse. #EqualPayDay

Hey, Bill O. It’s bad enough to come after us but do you really need to insult our accessories? They have no voice. #staynoisy purses.

And while we are on the subject, one detail in this New York Times story of Bill O’Reilly’s harassment is almost comical.  When she rejected his advances, he insulted her purse?  Women have to defend themselves against you, Bill, but our accessories have no voice.  Lay off.

Julie is aghast at the lame officiating at the LPGA this weekend. Fans from home emailing in their own rulings a day later?  We are 100% against this.  Lexi was robbed.

In Operation Sea Turtle, Liz found a new home for her mediation classes but was disappointed to read this news about the need for interval training.

Julie reviews the film Silence by Martin Scorsese and the HBO series Big Little Lies.  She didn’t finish either but she’s still got strong opinions.

Lian tells us more about her citizen diplomacy and provides Satellite Sisters in other cities some tips about how to get involved themselves. Thanks to the listeners who attended event at  Global Minnesota.

If you are coming to our event at the Santa Monica Public Library on April 22 at 2 pm, you might also want to take in the opening of the Museum of Ice Cream in downtown LA.  Our tickets are free.  Theirs not so much.
