Latest Satellite Sisters Show Covers Fantasia, Chilean Miners, Blueberry Pie and Our Turn-Around Plan for CNN.

by Liz on August 24, 2010

Lian and I fired up the Snowball microphone today to record a new Satellite Sisters show.  Listen here.  We cover a lot of ground today.  First, Lian and I discuss the ritual of the college drop-off.  The New York Times chronicles the difficulty parents today have in saying good-bye to their college-bound freshmen.  We SO did not have the problem in our family.  After the first few kids, my parents got out of the business of taking their children to college.  They wished us the best, but bid us farewell in our own driveway.  Then we drove one another to college, which was a blast. Hilarious details on the show.

In our news round-up, Lian and I cover the emotional roller coaster of the trapped miners in Chile, the sad tale of Fantasia Barrino, and several issues bugging Liz about CNN.  First, Rick Sanchez. What’s the deal?  Really.  What’s he doing?  Second, and much more importantly, how do we get the best possible person into Larry King’s job?  Let’s agree that it’s not rumored replacement Piers Morgan.  What is CNN thinking?  Luckily for us he has run into a few visa problems.

Please do not let this man, whoever he is, take over Larry King's slot on CNN. We can do better, people! Nominate your own hosts here. We discuss our choices on the show.

We can do better than that, Satellite Sisters!  We share our nominations on the show.  Listen and then tell us who you would nominate for their own prime time interview show.   Post your suggestions here and let’s see if we can get some of our own mo’ going.  There’s time if we act now!

Finally, we fill you in on a few new things coming for satellitesisters.com and chaoschronicles.com in September so stay tuned.

I think we need an alert of some kind. When any of the SS are laughing so hard on a podcast that they can’t speak……..a person should not be walking on a public path where she has to stop because she’s laughing so hard and then be 30 minutes from the nearest bathroom!!

OMG……..thanks, ladies!!
Liz for Larry!!

2 Marie Jeanne Lopez August 25, 2010 at 9:16 AM

Hi Liz and Lian,
Looking forward to listening to the show later this evening when I have a chance. But Liz did you see who is going to be on Larry King this Friday? Our man from New Orleans, Harry Connick, Jr. Maybe you could phone in to suggest your excellent replacement idea!?!

3 William J August 25, 2010 at 9:54 AM

As always I loved the Podcast and am anxiously awaiting the next one. While I wish I could agree with you all the time I just can’t endorse either Costas or Couric to replace King. I just don’t like them and it would chase me away from CNN.

If I were program director at CNN I would think outside the box and hire the Satellite Sisters. One sister for each night. We would start off the week on Monday with Lian and parenting tips. Tuesday would be Monica with nursing trends and music suggestions to listen to while recuperating from an injury or an illness. Wednesday would be International News with Julie, Thursday would be movie reviews and dating tips and the occasional cozy couch with Sheila, and Friday would be the news and political wrap-up for the week with Liz. There would be guest appearances for the Lab rights of course. Nothing like it on TV. It would celebrate women and attract men. Nobody loses. What does a time slot like that pay? If it were five million a year that would be a mil per sister and with one a day work week it would leave time for a couple Podcasts a week!

My other choices: Liz of course, Robin Roberts, Brian Williams, Erin Burnett, Craig Ferguson, Halle Berry, Jenny Sanford, Harry Connick, and I am sure more but that is just from memory.

No to Costas.
No to Couric.
Love you guys, but, I agree w/William J. on this one.
Mary Carillo, now, she’s a definite maybe.

Is there some reason CNN and MSNBC have an aversion to a person of color hosting
a major nighttime show? Any color? Then again, their ratings are falling for a reason,
ask Couric & CBS. Stop leaning so far to the left of left, and stick to the middle, and you may get a few ratings points.

I’d like to see a rotating series of hosts for a while. Why not? Let us see what people can offer?

Paul Rodriguez hosted his own spanish language comedy-talk show for a few years, it was good. Maria Elena Salinas? Former guest on your show. Linda Chavez, love her. Lisa Ling. She’s brilliant at anything. Jim Rome or Petros Papadakis, sports guys. Jim Hill of
KCBS. Carlos Amezcua of Fox 11.

In the end, Ryan Seacrest or some other generic fellow will get the gig no doubt.

Halle Berry? OK, on that line of thinking, I nominate anyone from the US Men’s
Olympic relay team (in their speedos preferably).

Oh yeah, love the news about the show /shows.

What recession? What job problems?
You guys just reinvented yourselves, learned new things,
and came out sounding & doing better than ever.

Quite the inspiration, in a period of down news, lost jobs,
downsizing, you really have shown how it can be done.

Thanks!

Katie Couric for Larry – I love her! I watch the CBS evening news because of her – my vote is for Katie!

Bob Costa’s hair would be too distracting – different color everyday – yikes!

chpdlvr, I’m with you!! The sound of silence caused by Lian gasping for breath because she’s laughing so hard is one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard. And it made me laugh out loud, waking my husband because I was listening on my ipod in bed!
Just priceless.

I’ve loved all the SS “Summer Splashes”, but this latest one does really take the cake. Loved the college drop-off tales and the hilarity that ensued!
I drove and moved myself into college; not a parent in sight. Of note however, it wasn’t a huge move – same metro area. Still, I always have felt just a little deprived of SOME sort of sentimental send-off. My daughter starts first grade next week, so, I’ve got a whole 12 years to watch the college drop-off trends ebb and tide. Will I send her on her merry way with a car-full of belongings and a pat on the back, or, be forcefully locked-out of the campus gates as I cling to the rod iron? With most of my parenting, I’m shooting for a happy medium. Only time will tell…

Fantastic podcast! When it comes to sounds, few things compare to the full-out laughter of friends. I had tears running down my face. Thank you, Lian and Liz. I can hardly wait to learn what you have up your sleeves for next month.

Liz…you’d be a great replacement for Larry. Others I would enjoy are Helen Mirren, Annette Bening, and Meryl Streep. All bright, witty women that I can’t get enough of. All equally unlikely.

I agree with William J; The Satellite Sisters of course! You would be a breath of fresh air for cnn and they need it!

So glad Liz talked Lian in to doing this show. I cried I was laughing so hard about the college drop offs Oh and the blueberry pie. I had soroity sisters who used the same solution to the food temptation as Sheila .. .specifically remember a time when one sister stomped all over a late night pizza delivery to “help” another sister. Too funny. Look forward to September shows. Thanks!
Roberta

Loved the podcast and can’t wait for the next one so we can hear whatever news you have :) Keep them coming and keep on laughing!!

13 MaryCatherine August 27, 2010 at 6:52 AM

Loved the podcast!!! It brought back memories of my trip to college in 1977. My parents put me on a plane from Long Island to Rochester NY with a friend also going to the same college. We arrived in Rochester with one suitcase full of clothes each looking for a cab to take us to school. It was a 30 minute ride that the cab driver did in 20. He dropped us at out dorm where UPS had delivered my bedding and clock radio in one box. That is all I had with me for 4 years. So much different than the the SUV filled to the brim with my daughters things a few years ago for her freshman year. She also brought her car!

14 MaryCatherine August 27, 2010 at 7:29 AM

Also, I think that Liz would be the best replacement for Larry!

Such a treat to hear you ladies laughing again—and it’s very contagious, I might add! Looking forward to September and your new season. So happy to have you back!! :-)

So much laughter! Love the stories of getting dropped off at college and the sabotage of the blueberry pie. Also, this week I listened to a classic SS with Lian and Monica at Disney World. Lian shared her experience on the Aerosmith Rockin Roller Coaster. I laughed so hard at Lian’s screams. I felt like I was there with her and my heart was racing when she was done. I get excited just thinking about that roller coaster!

I loved this one! First, I was laughing so hard listening to Liz and Lian telling about their college drop offs I had to stop the treadmill. As a retiee, from a university, this is the first fall in over 20 years that I have not had to deal with parents. Each year the parents got worse. We, in the office, would often wonder if the kid could even go to the bathroom by themself!

Loved the podcast! Laughed right along with you. But NO to Couric and NO to Costas…but a BIG YES to Liz as Larry’s replacement. As you were discussing Harry Connick and others as possibles, all I could think of is that LIZ would be the perfect person. Lizland on CNN! My DVR would be set permanently to that show.

19 sandy in newport September 1, 2010 at 5:57 PM

Loved the drop off…played it twice and then made my husband listen to it…I wonder if you all even know how funny you are…

About Larry….it has to be a woman, and one with great connections, will listen without judgement and ask all the questions that Larry doesn’t ask…which of course is why he always gets the story…oops that pretty much eleminates all the women I can think of…

Please work a little harder and faster getting that show…America needs to laugh right now…

Thanks so much for this podcast. I had a rough week at work and happened to listen at work to this on my friday. I laughed out loud at the college drop off stories. The sound of Lian laughing made my heart sing. Loved this summer series and looking forward to indian summer.

Liz is definitely the best choice to replace Larry. how do we start the campaign?

22 Tammy September 8, 2010 at 7:45 PM

Heard they made a decision. Evidently they just want someone horrible in this time slot regardless. At least we could laugh at Larry sometimes. I won’t turn the TV on for Piers Morgan.

Chilean miners being rescued … miracles do happen… Chilean miners mere seconds away from being rescued. Yeah!!!!!!!.
