Disney Merch, March Sadness and the Angela Merkel School of Body Language

Angela Merkel body language

Sisters In The News: Lian Dolan floats her theory that Liz Dolan and Angela Merkel probably went to the same school of body language, with majors side-eye and eye-roll.

Today on the Satellite Sisters Podcast, we cover everything from Beauty & The Beast to DWTS, from March Sadness to Brian’s Song. But we start Sisters in the News. What do Angela Merkel & Liz Dolan have in common? Lian will tell you. It’s a body language thing. And who could use a little bit of the indefatigable energy of Julie Dolan? The Secretary of State, that’s who. Lian Dolan on the headline news that made her think of her sisters.

First up, Lian attends the Fencing Grand Prix in Long Beach, CA.  Thanks, USOC, for the invitation. You know the Satellite Sisters are Olympic junkies but who knew that fencing was its own lifestyle?? Now Lian knows.

In the news, Lian sees parallels between Liz and Angela Merkel.  Apparently, they went to the same school of body language.  Cue the eye roll. Plus, Lian notes that our international correspondent Julie is indefatigable and would be an excellent candidate for an open slot at the State Department.  Hello, Rex?

The New York Historical Society has opened a new center devoted to the contributions of women in American history, the only one of its kind in the United States. Plus, Lian reports that Nevada just approved the E.R.A.  Remember the Equal Rights Amendment? Julie still has her button.

Urban Nana Julie has a few problems with children’s museums based on her recent visits to one in Brooklyn with her granddaughter Josephine.  Plus, on her Tuesday Trends she has a question from the Wall Street Journal:  Is your refrigerator awesome enough?

Beauty and The Beast Limited Edition Tumbler

Did you see Beauty and the Beast this weekend? And how long are you willing to stand in line for the Limited Edition Tumbler from the new movie?

Are your brackets all busted for March Madness?  So long Villanova and Duke. Liz introduces us to March Sadness, a sad song contest she heard about on OPB.  It was created by Julie Hahn in Boise and features a whole category of sad songs called Sadsteen.  Songs of misery from the Boss himself.  The River.  Streets of Philadelphia.  The Ghost of Tom Joad.  He’s the master. All songs listed on the March Sadness Facebook Group under Files once you join.

Speaking of sad, new reports tell us that the great Chicago Bear Gale Sayers is suffering from dementia. If you don’t remember Gale Sayers on the field, you may remember him as played by Billy Dee Williams in one of the best TV movies of all-time,  Brian’s Song. James Cann plays the dying Brian Piccolo. It’s a Satellite Sisters Sobfest.

Operation Sea Turtle, Liz’s fitness program, hits a snag called Yoga Sculpt Fusion.

Lian admires the Disney genius in creating the new Beauty and The Beast products.  Are you in line right now for the new tumbler?

Plus updates on from Lian on her  dance group, Steffi the German Shepherd and her vegetable garden.

Come join all five Satellite Sisters on April 22nd at the Santa Monica Public Library at 2 pm.  No-host Meet-Up to follow at Ester’s Wine Shop. Are you coming?  Thanks to Away Luggage for donating a door prize for this event.  Lian loves her Away Carry-On.  Come win one!

Satellite Sisters Recap Madam Secretary, Break in Diplomacy episode.

Lian Dolan and Julie Dolan do a Satellite Sisters recap of Madam Secretary

The Satellite Sisters recap Episode 315 of the CBS Drama Madam Secretary:  Break In Diplomacy.  Liz Dolan fills in for Julie Dolan as Acting Secretary of Recap reporting to Lian Dolan, Recapper-In-Chief.

The Satellite Sisters recap the CBS Drama Madam Secretary. Episode: Break in Diplomacy.

Let’s play “Who’s the inspiration?”  Hmm, let’s see. Who were the writers at CBS drama Madam Secretary thinking about when they wrote this episode?  This was a serious episode featuring serious themes about a world leader known for being a rough-around-the-edges narcissistic businessman who ran an unusual campaign. He has a history of lewd behavior and corrupt business dealings plus unusually close ties to a country that was a former foe. OK.  Guess.

If you guessed the Phillipines, you guessed right! Actually, that is the reputation of the ACTUAL president of the Philippines.
Storylines:
Satellite Sisters recap Madam Secretary Carolina Herrera dress on Tea Leoni.

Madam Secretary is just about to make it pretty darn clear to the President of the Philippines that sexual assault is not to be dismissed as a mere indiscretion. And she looks great in that Carolina Herrera dress while she does it.

Sock It To Me, Bess or Let Them Eat Drones

The Singapore Exchange – a meaningful territorial accord with Asia Pacific. She ends up getting in a fist fight with the Philipine leader, forcing her to decide – like every woman ever—whether she should she say something about an attempted assault.  But she can only make this decision after digging into what appears to be the biggest bowl of cereal ever poured.
Jay Undercover
Bess gets her CIA on and enlists Sadsack Jay to investigate the suspicious death of Kevin from Accounting, a deep cover CIA agent. Turns out Jay is pretty good at spycraft and uncovers Kevin’s real mission.
Duck Dynastys Goes to the Devil
We are rejecting this storyline on the grounds that Henry seems in way over his head. But we don’t trust Ian and his neck tattoos. Not one bit.
Binders Full of Blouses:
The star of the show—the Carolina Herrera dress Bess wore for seemingly 36 hours across the Pacific and back without a wrinkle.
The Orange Pussy Blouse—again, a political statement????
The Theory White Trench – impractical color but we want one.

Work-At-Home Parents Nightmare, Marissa Mayer, World Sleep Day

BBC professor tv fail

Best of the Internet! Every work-at-home parents nightmare, right? But we say #staynoisy Toddler Girl! We like your swagger.

On today’s Satellite Sisters, Lian Dolan celebrates “The Best of the Internet”.  We love the BBC video of the professor being interrupted by his kids during an interview,  the memes that sprang up from Kellyanne Conway’s comment on microwaves being used as tools of surveillance and the outpouring of love for Amy Krouse Rosenthal, the author of a much shared Modern Love column, who passed away. The first is the ultimate work-at-home parents nightmare, the second was a nutty “all in good fun” alternative to news and the third is just a heartbreaker, but a reminder that the internet can also spread love.

In other news, Liz is signing up to be a delegate of World Sleep Day. She is hoping that her responsibilities mainly involve napping in luxury hotels. She also wants to remind us that even though Marissa Mayer’s Yahoo severance package is insane, it’s nice to see a woman get overpaid as much as men! But before you get too excited, here’s a reminder from Fortune that the guy coming in to do her old job will be making DOUBLE what she was!  Who are you mad at now, internet??

Mikaela Shiffrin

Mikaela Shiffrin is on the verge of becoming the world’s top skier this year, an honor that will not come to Liz who sustained a career-threatening injury last night at her book club.

In her Operation Sea Turtle update about her health and fitness program, Liz reports on an athletic injury sustained during her book club.  That’s pathetic. Lian has several inspirational sports stories: the guy who paddled across the Atlantic, the amazing UConn women’s basketball team and Mikaela Shiffren, about to become only the 4th American to win a skiing World Cup.

And poor signage at the Louvre leads to a strike.  This is why you have to love the French.

Satellite Sisters Talk TV: Recap of Madam Secretary episode Labor of Love

Lian Dolan and Julie Dolan do a Satellite Sisters recap of Madam Secretary

Lian and Julie recap the Labor of Love episode of the CBS drama Madam Secretary.

Satellite Sisters Lian Dolan and Julie Dolan discuss the latest episode of Madam Secretary: Love, Heartbreak, Peace & Poison! What an episode! It’s called Labor of Love and it had it all.  This show looked like it was going to be a schmoopy episode about young love, new love and love lost—until EVERYONE DIED!!!!

Storylines:

Love is in the Air—until it’s totally not!

The Romeo and Juliet of Colombia show up in America to sign a peace treaty and a trade deal. Unfortunately, they don’t really love each other.

Soledad—the first person to ever actually be inspired by one of President Dalton’s speech- goes runaway bride and hides out at STEVIE’s apartment.

Meanwhile, are the future of acai and quinoa are in the balance? What are we going to eat in California if this trade deal doesn’t go through?

Jay’s storyline. Have you heard the one about the three wonks that go running in puffer jackets?

Finds out his wife is actually having an emotional affair with his best friend—thanks to Blake’s Dateline techniques.

Daisy’s Storyline: I think we can all agree that Daisy should stop dating guys from work.

First—no kissing in the office.

Henry McCord on CBD drama Madam Secretary. Recap by the Satellite Sisters.

Henry McCord is off on a storyline we don’t really care much about this week, but we do care a lot about you, Henry. Are you sure theologians are cut out for undercover work?

In the meantime:

Duck Dynasty goes to the Devil—ugh. We had sort of forgotten about Henry’s latest undercover mission—infiltrating an extreme Christian group with a former military guy.

We will never look at neck tattoos the same.

We  think Henry should never do this job again. I gotta say, he’s not very good at it!

And then at the end—everything GOES NUTS!!!!

Drowning!

Poison!

CIA?

Binders Full of Blouses: Our favorite wardrobe items from this episode.

Bess totally on point with another good black tie dress with sparkle neckline.

Henry’s Tux

Nadine’s white silk blouse of many buttons and bell sleeves

Men in the Doghouse, Entertaining Sheila movie review

Satellite Sisters discuss political scandal of the day: Eliot Spitzer and a prostitution ring.

On this New To You Satellite Sisters podcast from March 2008, Sheila diagnoses Eliot Spitzer as a “pathological narcissist”, a phrase that’s become more familiar lately, no?

Welcome to the Doghouse. On this New to You show from March 14, 2008, we tackle the gubernatorial sex scandal in NY: Eliot Spitzer, former crusading prosecutor and Governor of NY, is client #9 in a prostitution ring.  Dr. Sheila weighs in on his psychological state: “pathological narcissism”. Her diagnosis of this out-of-control politician is sounding so familiar now!

Julie puts a number of men “in the doghouse” for insisting that prostitution is a victimless crime.  Alan DershowitzJames CarvilleBill Maher, you are on notice!
The First Ladies Desk has a lot to say about Mrs. Spitzer. That poor woman stood by her man at his press conference and then Dr. Laura Schlessinger of radio fame was all over TV blaming her for not “doing enough to keep her man at home.” Shut it, sister.
Julie has an International News Round-Up about China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Entertaining Sheila reviews Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day.
Lian explains to her mother-in-law how to listen to a podcast.
Ten years later, we still want to help you figure this out!

Urban Nana in Brooklyn, DNA Report, Grocery Trends

Dennis Rodman at West Point

North Korea and Malaysia are in the diplomatic tit-for-tat and guess who steps up at West Point to address the issues?  Dennis Rodman. He offers to broker a meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un. We cannot make this up, people.

On today’s Satellite Sisters podcast, Urban Nana is in Brooklyn but Julie’s still got the international news from North Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines,  Lian has grocery trends and Worst Pitch of the Day plus Liz wants her DNA to work a little harder for Operation Sea Turtle.

Julie reviews the latest diplomatic tit-for-tat between North Korea and Malaysia over the assassination of Kim Jong Un’s half brother.  Good news for North Koreans who are now not allowed to leave Malaysia. Bad news for the Malaysian delegation in North Korea.  No exit for you. Luckily, we read that Dennis Rodman is stepping in to broker a meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un. Let us know as soon as they start selling tickets to that one. Julie also warns the team at our favorite CBS TV drama that the Philippine government is protesting an upcoming episode.  Fact or fiction?  We really can’t tell anymore. Be sure to listen to Satellite Sisters Talk TV recap of Madam Secretary for more discussion of Tess’ Philippine situation.

Satellite Sisters recommend the Fondoodler, a hot glue gun for cheese.

A hot glue gun for cheese? What took so long! The Fondoodler was one of many products that Liz found in the Satellite Sisters email box and cannot wait to try.

Lian says Jeff Bezos is working on amazon deliveries on the moon but Liz is still not that interested in going. Lian has the Worst Pitch of the Week.  Kegels and kids do not mix.  Sorry, Kegel Bear.  Liz gets her latest DNA report from 23andme and is disappointed that their wellness tips are pretty much Self Magazine circa 1988. Lian’s grocery store trends and food trends include the prediction that “grocerants”, part restaurant/part grocery store are the coming thing.  OK, by why not call them “resteries”, a much better fake word. And Liz reads the spam that came into sisters@satellitesisters mailbox.  Highlights include:
